All stories have a theme. It helps identify who you are and your place in the world. That was the challenge I faced this week as I continued writing Hybrid.

In various moments I’ve physically stopped what I was doing after realizing the theme I was living out wasn’t working for me. Now, I didn’t stop right away, but I am getting there.

And at each of these pivots it became clear that the reason this or that theme failed was because they allowed me to live in dissonance. When I choose to be incongruent I can go off the rails for a time, but eventually my desire for harmony is stronger.

For all the frustration of growing up in a clash of cultures with my parents, their partnership never seemed to waiver. While I disagreed with so many of their methods, their love for each other, for God and for living life in truth was pretty rock solid.

And my theme? A work in progress that I’ve lifted from the book of Micah: to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with my God.

I’m working on it.
